A = Chinese
B = Foreigner
A: Hi, did you know that Mid-autumn festival is coming very soon? Have you ever tried moon cakes before？
B: Oh yes, many times.
A: What kind of moon cakes did you try?
B: I have tried meat ones, red bean and green bean.
A: What is your favorite one?
B: I prefer the meat one, because I prefer salty over sweet. However, sometimes, with a cup of coffee, it is very nice to have a red bean moon cake to balance the flavour.
A: Have you ever tried an egg yolk lotus seed moon cake, which is typically from Guangdong?
B: No, I have not. What kind of flavour is that?
A: It is sort of sweet and salty at the same time. Its very nice if you do not like too much sweetness.
B: That sounds very nice. What do you traditionally do for Mid-autumn festival?
A: Traditionally for Mid-autumn festival, we travel home to see our family. We will have a very big home-cooked meal and a big family gathering. In the evening, we will look at the full moon together and eat moon cakes. Of course, this has changed now, as a lot of families would book hotel restaurants instead.
B: But why do people decide to book at a hotel restaurant instead of eating at home?
A: Well you know, many people do not have the time and energy to prepare - going to a hotel restaurant is more simply convenient, you do not need to worry about doing groceries and cleaning afterwards. All you have to do is to pick up the phone and book a table, no preparation needed.
B: Does everybody across China celebrate the same way?
A: Every region is different in celebrating Mid-autumn festival, and every family eats different food as well as enjoys different flavours of moon cakes.
B: What is your favorite part of this festival?
A: Well my favorite part of this festival is definitely to go home and see my family. But you know, working at a hotel is difficult to take time off. We are always busiest during the festivals.
B: How often do you get to see your family?
A: Once a year at the most, usually during the spring festival.
B: Oh thats really not enough. It seems that working at a hotel is not an easy job and I think people working in the hotel industry defintely deserve more understanding and respect.
